Kenny’s Reef is so named after the late great Kenny Harris, larger than life American hero, 62 year old man of action who had travelled the world’s best dive sites and had a special love for Puerto Galera. He accompanied Divemaster Mike Fehr and me on a few exploratory dives when we found this reef and surfaced from the dive grinning from ear to ear like a school boy.
The reason is, firstly that no-one else is diving (or even knows about?) this reef, secondly that the various species of hard corals found here are totally unique and do not grow anywhere else and thirdly, that along with the huge colony of Mandarin Fish that are found here there are thousands of Juvenile reef fishes to discover and some species that are very rare indeed.
The reason for this is that the water is largely undisturbed by divers and the reef is very close to mangroves that have been growing unhindered for centuries. It is an ancient reef. Hard corals grow so large that they fall under their own weight and lie there for years whilst newer corals grow on top of them. The visibility is not always fantastic (5-10m) because the bottom composition is sand/silt, but having said that, the macro on this dive is amazing. Some keen photographers have even dubbed this site Jurassic Park because of the size and uniqueness of the species found here. A must dive for any macro photographer.
